The Comforting Story

The usual reassurance is familiar: every generation panics about new technology, and society eventually adapts. The printing press, railroads, electricity, automobiles, radio, television, computers, and the internet all produced disruption. Institutions lagged, then caught up.

That story is mostly true. It is also incomplete. The reason society caught up was not only human wisdom. It was that the technologies themselves eventually saturated.

The Shape Of Prior Waves

Most major technologies followed an S-curve. They started slowly, accelerated, and then flattened when they reached a natural limit. Every town had a railroad stop or it did not. Every home had electricity or it did not. Every household had a washing machine or it did not. Every adult had a smartphone or did not.

Saturation gave law, culture, schools, markets, and norms a target. They could lag behind the technology because the technology eventually slowed down.

The AI Difference

Artificial intelligence may be different because the thing being scaled is not a household appliance or a physical network. It is intelligence, or at least machine capability that can imitate and automate pieces of intelligence.

There may be limits. We should be humble about prediction. But the early curve looks less like a saturated consumer adoption curve and more like a compounding capability curve. Better models help produce better tools, better tools attract more investment, and more investment builds more compute.

Act Before Certainty

The hard part is that exponential and logistic curves can look similar early on. By the time the difference is obvious, the path may already be set.

That means prudence changes. In a normal adoption curve, waiting can be wise. In a possibly exponential capability curve, waiting may simply mean letting the system decide first.
