The Limits Of Should

Technology ethics has produced many true sentences. Platforms should respect dignity. AI should be transparent. Children should be protected. Companies should not exploit attention. These claims are right, but they often do not change behavior.

They are written in the imperative mood: do this, do not do that. The problem is that markets, products, and incentives do not obey moral verbs by themselves.

Start With What Is

A more useful ethics starts with the indicative: what is the system doing, what does it optimize, where does money flow, who has power, what are the switching costs, and which harms are unmeasured?

Only after that diagnosis can the moral claim become operational. Otherwise, ethics becomes a statement of preference rather than a tool for change.

Mechanisms That Work

Mechanisms include product defaults, liability rules, procurement standards, reporting requirements, age-appropriate design, audit rights, data portability, interoperability, fiduciary duties, funding conditions, and governance structures.

The right mechanism depends on the market structure. A monopoly platform, an open protocol, a school tool, a medical AI, and a consumer entertainment app do not require the same lever.

Ethics For Builders

For builders, the lesson is direct: do not stop at values language. Translate values into design constraints, business-model choices, review processes, and measurable commitments.

If the ethic cannot survive contact with the dashboard, the dashboard will win.
